How to Draw Sonic Step by Step (Easy Chibi for Beginners)

By Georgina · Published Nov 8, 2026 · Updated Nov 8, 2026

Sonic's spikes look tricky, but here's the secret: you draw them first and let the head hide half of each one. After that he's simple round shapes plus a pair of oversized sneakers. Here I'll walk you through how to draw Sonic step by step as a short, friendly chibi with a thumbs up and a cheeky grin. This is my own simple fan-art version for practice, not official SEGA artwork, so feel free to make it yours.

How to draw sonic step by step - finished colored Sonic drawing
Big eyes, a confident smile and those famous red shoes. Twelve short steps take you from one circle to this speedy blue hedgehog.

Copy the bright blue lines in each picture; gray marks what you already drew. The pale blue helpers get erased near the end, so keep them faint.

Quick overview
โฑ๏ธ Time: about 30 to 40 minutes with coloring
๐ŸŽฏ Level: easy, fine for kids from about 6 up
โœ๏ธ Steps: 12
๐Ÿฆ” You'll draw: chibi Sonic standing front on, giving a thumbs up

Supplies for a Speedy Hedgehog Sketch

  • A pencil you can press lightly (HB is a good pick)
  • A soft eraser
  • A black marker or fineliner for the final lines
  • Crayons or colored pencils: blue, peach, green and red
  • Plain white paper

Skip the white crayon; bare paper makes the gloves and eyes.

How to Draw Sonic Step by Step

Step 1: Draw a head circle and guide lines

How to draw sonic step by step step 1 - draw a head circle and guide lines

Start with a flat ground line near the bottom of the page and a straight line down the middle. Near the top, draw a big circle for the head, centered on that middle line. Cross it with a short level line a little above halfway; the eyes will sit on it. In chibi style the head is nearly as tall as the body, so keep it big.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Trace around a cup or a roll of tape if your circles come out lumpy. Nobody will know once it's inked.

Step 2: Add guides for the spikes and body

How to draw sonic step by step step 2 - add guides for the spikes and body

From behind the head, draw three straight lines going out on each side: one up and out, one straight across, one down and out. Those are the directions of the spikes. Under the head, add an egg-shaped oval for the body. Then sketch simple bent lines for the arms with a small circle at each hand, and two flat ovals on the ground for the shoes.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Put the right hand circle up near the chin. That raised hand is where the thumbs up goes.

Step 3: Draw the swept-back spikes

How to draw sonic step by step step 3 - draw the swept-back spikes

Follow each guide line with a long, curved spike that starts wide at the head and ends in a sharp point. Let every spike bend slightly downward, as if the wind is pushing it back. Don't draw the spike edges inside the head circle; stop where they meet it.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Make the middle spikes the longest. Equal spikes all around make him look like a sun instead of a hedgehog.

Step 4: Outline the head and pointed ears

How to draw sonic step by step step 4 - outline the head and pointed ears

Go over the head circle with a firmer line. On top, add two pointed ears that lean slightly outward, with their bases tucked behind the head. Inside each ear, draw a smaller triangle for the inner ear. The ears sit a little in from the sides, about where the clock would show eleven and one.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Keep the ear tips soft and slightly rounded. Sharp, tall ears push him toward looking like a cat.

Step 5: Draw the big connected eyes

How to draw sonic step by step step 5 - draw the big connected eyes

Sonic's eyes are one white shape: two tall ovals that touch in the middle, with a little dip on top where they join. Place it on the eye line, filling most of the upper face. Inside each half, draw an oval iris leaning toward the middle, a tall pupil inside it and a small shine circle.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Put both shine dots on the same side. When they match, the eyes look straight at you.

Step 6: Add the muzzle and a smile

How to draw sonic step by step step 6 - add the muzzle and a smile

Below the eyes, draw a wide rounded shape for the muzzle. It covers the lower face and tucks up under the eyes. Right where the eyes end, add a small oval nose. Under it, draw an open smile that rises a bit more on one side, with a short dimple line at each corner and a small tongue at the bottom.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: That lopsided smile is what gives Sonic his confident look. A perfectly even grin feels too sweet for him.

Step 7: Outline the small body and belly

How to draw sonic step by step step 7 - outline the small body and belly

Trace the egg-shaped body under the head. The top is hidden behind the chin, so start where it peeks out. Inside, draw a smaller oval for the light belly, leaving an even band of body around it. I keep the body small on purpose; a short body makes the head and shoes look extra big and fun.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If the body looks too wide, shave a little off both sides before moving on. It's easier to fix now than after the arms.

Step 8: Draw two arms, one bent up

How to draw sonic step by step step 8 - draw two arms, one bent up

Sonic's arms are slim, but give them a real width with two lines each, not a single stick. The left arm hangs down and slightly out toward its hand circle. The right arm bends at the elbow and comes back up toward the raised hand circle. Leave the ends open for now, since the gloves will cover them.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Keep both lines of an arm the same distance apart all the way down. Arms that pinch in the middle look broken.

Step 9: Add the gloves and a thumbs up

How to draw sonic step by step step 9 - add the gloves and a thumbs up

At the end of each arm draw a small oval cuff. The lower hand is a round mitten shape with a short line for the thumb. For the raised hand, draw a rounded fist, then a thumb sticking straight up from the top. Three short lines across the fist show the curled fingers.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Draw the fist a little bigger than the lower glove. Hands closer to us should look larger.

Step 10: Draw the legs and red sneakers

How to draw sonic step by step step 10 - draw the legs and red sneakers

Two short legs go straight down from the body, each drawn with two lines. At the bottom of each leg, add a small white sock cuff. Then draw the shoes over the foot ovals: long, rounded, pointing slightly outward, with a flat sole line near the bottom. Finish with a slanted strap across the middle of each shoe.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Go big on the sneakers. They should be about as long as the body is tall, or he loses his running-shoe charm.

Step 11: Ink the drawing and erase the guides

How to draw sonic step by step step 11 - ink the drawing and erase the guides

Trace every keeper line with your marker, slowly. I ink the face first, while my hand is fresh, and then work outward. Let the ink dry for a minute before erasing all the pale guide lines, or the marker will smear across the page.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Ink the long spike curves in one smooth pull from the head out to the tip, not in short scratchy bits.

Step 12: Color your Sonic

How to draw sonic step by step step 12 - color your sonic

Fill all the fur with a bright blue. The muzzle and belly get a light peach, and so do the arms and inner ears. Color the irises green, the nose and pupils black, and the sneakers red. Leave the white parts bare, then add a gray shadow under his feet.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Press a little harder with the blue along one side of the head and spikes. That darker edge makes him look round.

Where Sonic Drawings Tend to Slip

  • Spikes drawn on top of the head. Lines crossing the face make him look messy. Draw the spikes so they stop at the head circle.
  • Two separate eyes. Spaced-out eyes change the character completely. Let the two white ovals touch in the middle.
  • A tiny muzzle. If the peach area is a small circle, the face looks empty. Let it cover the whole lower face.
  • Stick arms and legs. Single lines look unfinished next to the big head. Give every limb two lines with a little space between.
  • Small shoes. Little feet make the chibi body wobble. Draw chunky sneakers that stretch past the body on both sides.

Sonic Twists for Your Next Sketch

Once you have the pose, swap the thumbs up for a wave, or add a few speed lines behind him so he looks like he's dashing. A scatter of gold rings makes an easy background. Younger artists can skip the dimples and the shoe straps and he still reads clearly. Want another game hero in the same chibi style? Try my how to draw Mario step by step lesson next. Sonic Drawing Help for Young Artists

What is the easiest way to draw Sonic?

Start with one circle for the head and draw the spikes behind it first. Then add the connected eyes, a wide muzzle, a small oval body, and finish with gloves and big shoes.

Is this Sonic drawing easy enough for kids?

Yes. Kids from about six can follow it, because every part is a circle, oval or curved point. Little ones can leave out the dimples, finger lines and shoe straps.

What colors do you need to color Sonic?

Blue for the fur, peach for the muzzle and arms, green eyes and red sneakers. Black covers the nose and pupils; white is just the paper.

How long does it take to draw Sonic?

Plan on about 30 to 40 minutes, coloring included. The spikes and eyes take the most care; the body and shoes go quickly.

Grab your blue crayon and send your Sonic racing across the page. ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿ’จ
