How to Make Gold Leaf Wall Art

Posted by Morena Hockley

I love wall art that has meaning!

My husband is a huge Beatles fan, so I made this for him. I combined sheet music with gold leaf to create a piece that is heartfelt and beautiful to look at.

Supplies:

  • Wood Art Square
  • Mod Podge
  • Sheet Music
  • Black Gesso
  • Crafter's Workshop Stencil - Well Rounded
  • Mona Lisa Adhesive Pen With Gold Leaf (Or try this gold pen from Elmer's)

Search online for an image to use. There are lots of free silhouettes to be found! I used an image found here. Print the image on the sheet music.

Use Mod Podge to adhere the sheet music to the wood. Paint the edges with black gesso.

Use the stencil to add the adhesive to the image. Place the gold leaf sheet over the adhesive and brush off the excess. (I have a more detailed gold leaf application tutorial here.)

I added a bit more gold leaf to other parts of the image to add some detail and shine. When you're working with gold leaf, do one section of the piece at a time. If the adhesive dries too much, the gold leaf won't adhere.

I love this one of a kind piece of wall art! I think I will make a set of 4 with each of the Beatles on a tile. You could do the same thing with any artist you admire, even substituting the sheet music with other papers to commemorate sports heroes, movie stars, and other people you look up to.
