The other day I decided it was time to reacquaint myself with craft foam. Have you ever used foam before? I remember using pre-cut foam pieces when I was younger, but I have not used it in the last 20+ years! I wanted to see if I could come up with a project using foam for us older folks that was functional and on-trend. Cactuses are everywhere right now in the crafting world, and we could all use an extra tote whether it's for the beach, to transport veggies home from the farmer's market, or as a work bag. This is how my cactus tote was born. Cactus image + tote = cute cactus tote!

Foam is pretty awesome if you ask me. Its soft, bendable texture makes it perfect for so many different projects. It's also not going to get ruined when it gets wet! Score! My initial thought was to try and freehand my cactus on my foam, but instead I just traced a cactus image onto my foam to get the shape right (not sure how my freehand would have turned out!). I then paired my foam with paint pens to add detail and extra color. Just think, you could add your cactus applique to a lunch bag, or make a mini cactus and add two to a pair of ballet flats. How cute would cactus shoes be?!?

What else would you put a cactus on?

Here's what you'll need:

  • Tote Bag
  • Green Craft Foam
  • Pink Craft Foam
  • Yellow Craft Foam
  • Paint Pens (in different colors)
  • Glue Gun and Glue
  • Scissors
  • Cactus Template
  • Pencil

Arrange your foam on your tote.

I started by gluing my flower to the top of my cactus. Then, I added glue to the back of my entire cactus and glued it to my tote.

I then added glue to the back of my pot and glue it on top of my cactus so it looked my cactus was coming out of my pot. Let your glue dry and your tote is ready to go!
